How to count syllables

Counting syllables comes down to one idea: one vowel sound = one syllable. Here are the simple rules that handle the tricky cases, with examples.

  1. 1

Count the vowel sounds, not the vowel letters

Every syllable has exactly one vowel sound. Say the word aloud and count the sounds — not the a, e, i, o, u letters on the page.

“rain” has two vowel letters but one vowel sound → 1 syllable.

  2. 2

    Drop a silent final e

A silent “e” at the end of a word doesn't make its own sound, so it doesn't add a syllable.

    “make” → 1 syllable; “name” → 1 syllable.

  3. 3

Two vowels together usually = one sound

Vowel pairs (diphthongs) like ai, oa, ea, ou often glide into a single vowel sound and count once.

    “boat” → 1; “beautiful” → beau-ti-ful → 3.

  4. 4

A consonant + le at the end adds a beat

Words ending in a consonant followed by “-le” usually get an extra syllable for that ending.

    “ta-ble” → 2; “sim-ple” → 2; “lit-tle” → 2.

  5. 5

Every syllable needs a vowel sound

If a chunk of letters has no vowel sound, it isn't a separate syllable. Clap the word out to feel the beats.

“strength” is one big cluster but one beat → 1 syllable.

Counting syllables FAQ

What is a syllable?

A syllable is a single, unbroken unit of sound in a word, built around one vowel sound. Words are made of one or more syllables — “cat” has one, “water” has two, “beautiful” has three.

What's the easiest way to count syllables?

Say the word out loud and clap once for each beat, or rest your hand under your chin — your jaw drops once per syllable. Each drop is one vowel sound, which is one syllable.

Does every syllable have a vowel?

Yes — every syllable contains exactly one vowel sound. That's why counting vowel sounds (not vowel letters, and not consonants) gives you the syllable count.

How many syllables should a haiku have?

A traditional English haiku has 17 syllables across three lines, in a 5-7-5 pattern. Paste your lines into the counter to check each one.
